Cardiff City transfer news as Wickham deal on brink and Watters scores then sees red

These are your Cardiff City headlines on Sunday, February 12.

Wickham deal on brink of completion

Cardiff boss Sabri Lamouchi says he hopes to have Connor Wickham available for Tuesday night's trip to Birmingham City.

The Frenchman saw his side go down 3-1 to high-flying Middlesbrough on Saturday but it will be the clash against the Blues where he'll be more accurately judged.

Having more firepower on board should, in theory, help Cardiff in their quest to wriggle free from the Championship relegation zone and a deal to sign Wickham is now on the brink of completion.

On the prospect of the 29-year-old free agent signing, the Bluebirds boss said: "I hope he will sign very quickly. I hope to have him for Birmingham City.

"Let me talk about the players who are available for the club. As soon as he signs we will put him in the squad. How he can help us. He is just a Championship player, with his experience, his goals and he is strong and has quality as well.

"That's why we are trying to sign him."

Watters' mixed afternoon

On-loan forward Max Watters had mixed fortunes on Saturday, scoring and then being sent off before half-time in Barnsley's clash with Cambridge United.

Watters pounced when Devante Cole's effort was saved to poke home within the first 10 minutes, but he was heading for an early bath before the break when he was shown a straight red card by referee Ross Joyce after an elbow on U's defender Lloyd Jones.

“You can see why he’s sending him off," said Tykes boss Michael Duff after the game.

“I don’t think there’s any malice in it, I don’t think he’s throwing an elbow at him but he is leading with his arm.

“I can understood why the ref has given it but it probably sums up where we’re at at the minute. It’s a toss up between a yellow and a red and it’s always going to be red at the minute.”

The 23-year-old has made five appearances for the League One club, scoring once.

Hasselbaink on Lamouchi appointment

Former Bluebirds striker Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink says Lamouchi's appointment at Cardiff is a good one, urging the board to afford him time to rescue the club from the clutches of relegation.

Lamouchi is the fourth manager of the season to sit in the dugout at Cardiff City Stadium, with Steve Morison, Mark Hudson and Dean Whitehead (on an interim basis) all taking the reins this term.

Lamouchi's know-how of the league should hold him in good stead, believes the Dutchman.

“It’s not stable at Cardiff," Hasselbaink said before the clash with Boro on Saturday. "They have got a really good manager now in Sabri Lamouchi but in the last two matches, they’ve not been able to get a good result. Lamouchi knows the league, I was quite happy for Cardiff when they got him but the club needs stability.

“They need to give the manager time and not panic if he goes five or six straight games without a win."
