Cardiff City transfer news as Morison reveals 'a couple of additions needed' and new signing explains why he chose Bluebirds

The Cardiff City headlines for Sunday, July 17.

Steve Morison gives transfer hint

Steve Morison has said Cardiff need "a couple more" signings before the transfer window closes.

Cardiff have signed 12 players so far this summer, however no striker has been brought in yet and it is clearly an area in which City want to strengthen.

Some wondered whether there might only be a solitary striker coming through the door, however Morison is confident he can get at least one more through the door in the coming weeks.

"We've signed some excellent players," he said after the Cheltenham Town game. "I'm really pleased with the group we have got together.

"There are still a couple of additions needed. We know that and they will happen."

The manager also offered a hint as to the type of player he is looking to add to his group. It is thought Cardiff will continue with their transfer mantra of adding more mobility to the squad and, reading between the lines a little, Morison further corroborated that.

"Physical presence can be construed in lots of different ways. If you outrun someone it doesn't matter how big or strong you are," he added.

"We've highlighted what we want, we know what we want. Everyone has been used to a certain way here for a long time. 'You need a big man here, you need a big man there, you need to do this, you need to do that.' We are changing the narrative, we are trying to change it. Trust us."

Kipre: Morison convinced me Cardiff was the right place

New signing Cedric Kipre has revealed conversations early on in the transfer window with manager Steve Morison convinced him the Welsh capital was the right place for him.

The centre-back signed on loan on Friday and even made his first appearance in the pre-season friendly with Cheltenham Town on Saturday. He was linked with a number of clubs throughout the window, but when asked why he chose City, he said: "I would say the conversation with the coach, the manager, because we started speaking very early in the window.

"He showed a real interest and it was the strongest interest. He showed a lot that he wanted to have me on board, so that's how I made my decision."

He will want to muscle his way into Morison's starting lineup for that season opener against Norwich City on July 30. He has two more pre-season games to force his way into the manager's thinking and, looking ahead to that Canaries game, he said: "We start against a big team, it's going to be a big game and I am looking forward to it."

Branthwaite seals PSV move

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who was linked with the Bluebirds, has sealed a season-long loan move to Dutch side PSV.

The centre-back was reportedly a target for Cardiff, who were in the market for a centre-back, however those links were played down to WalesOnline at the time.

PSV, Schalke, Middlesbrough, Sheffield United, Huddersfield Town, Blackpool, Cardiff and Sunderland were all reported to be interested parties by the Daily Mail.

The Bluebirds have now signed Cedric Kipre, of course, while they also missed out on Auston Trusty at Arsenal, who has signed for Birmingham City. You can read more about that here.

Tomlin scores for Donny

Former Cardiff playmaker Lee Tomlin scored for Doncaster during a pre-season win over the Bluebirds' Championship rivals Huddersfield Town on Saturday.

WalesOnline learned last week that Tomlin was training with Donny and that the League Two club were hopeful of signing the player this summer.

Well, he will have endeared himself to Doncaster fans on Saturday, scoring the penalty which downed the Terriers in the friendly match. Tomlin was listed as a trialist in the official post-match report, a term he took umbrage with as he screenshotted it on his social media accompanied by a 'facepalm' emoji.

Dillon Phillips on Cheltenham return

Bluebirds keeper Dillon Phillips has reflected on his time at Cheltenham Town after Cardiff's 2-1 in there on Saturday.

Phillips played the final 30 minutes of Saturday’s friendly at the Completely-Suzuki Stadium as City hit back from 1-0 down to win the match. The shot-stopper will want to do all he can to impress, of course, given he now has Jak Alnwick and Ryan Allsop vying to be Cardiff's No.1 this season.

But, thinking back to when he was 20 and on loan with the Robins from Charlton in 2015, a year which saw Cheltenham win the title to get promoted to League Two, Phillips told GloucestershireLive : “That year was my first taste of proper football and I owe Cheltenham a lot because it gave me a platform to build off,” Phillips said.

“Just driving through town on the way to the ground was nice, bringing back some great memories and it was nice to see a few familiar faces. It was nice that some of the fans remembered what we did that season.”
