Cardiff City transfer news as Burnley defender linked and Oxford United and Blackpool target striker

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Sunday, July 9.

Cardiff linked with defender

Cardiff City and QPR are reportedly interested in signing Burnley centre-back Bobby Thomas on loan.

The Bluebirds have already added a central defender in the form of Greece international Dimitrios Goutas, however the club have not ruled out adding more defensive reinforcements before the window closes.

Thomas spent the first half of last season on loan with Bristol Rovers in League One, before leaving for Barnsley and Oakwell in January as the Tykes attempted to achieve promotion to the Championship - which they ultimately failed to do.

It was thought Thomas had an option to make his loan stint at Barnsley permanent if they got promoted, but with the Yorkshire club stuck in League One for another season, and Michael Duff having left for Swansea, Thomas is on the lookout for a Championship move.

And Sun reporter Alan Nixon claims Cardiff and QPR are interested in the 22-year-old's signature. Thomas played 26 times for Bristol Rovers and 25 times for Barnsley last season, scoring three goals across those spells. He has also had loan spells at Barrow and Kendal Town earlier in his career.

Cardiff do look a little thin at centre-back beyond Goutas and Mark McGuinness, with Jack Simpson having had a mixed first season in the Welsh capital and Perry Ng a more natural right back.

Oxford and Blackpool keen on Mark Harris

Recently-released striker Mark Harris is a target for League One sides Oxford United and Blackpool, according to reports.

Harris was offered a one-year contract by Cardiff, but with game time not guaranteed following the arrival of new manager Erol Bulut, the Wales international decided to seek a new challenge.

Quite where he ends up will be intriguing to see, with Championship clubs and League One sides having been linked with him in the past.

Now, though, Oxford and Blackpool are the latest to be linked, again by the Sun's Nixon. Ciaron Brown and Josh Murphy have moved to the Kassam Stadium in recent seasons and Harris could join his old Bluebirds team-mates if he opts for a move to Oxfordshire.

The forward, who has been capped five times by Wales and went to the World Cup last November, scored 10 goals in 95 games for the Bluebirds.

The week ahead

Cardiff have one week until the head out to Portugal and are pressing ahead with their recruitment plan. While it's not yet certain more will come through the door before they make that trip to the Algarve, it's certainly the hope.

Cardiff have made three signings and they want at least half a dozen more before the window closes. Attacking and creative players are still high on Erol Bulut's wish list.

We could well see some new faces in the game against Bristol Rovers, again behind closed doors, on Tuesday. By that point, Ike Ugbo and Dimitrios Goutas will have had a week's worth of training under their belt with their new team and have a chance of playing. Yakou Meite is perhaps less likely.

Jamilu Collins is also likely to be back this week, with Bulut last week confirming the left-back, who missed practically all of last season with an ACL rupture, would be up to speed this week. If he doesn't play a part against Rovers, one expects him to play a part in the behind-closed-doors game against Premier League opposition, which we understand to be Fulham, before the trip to Portugal.

Callum O'Dowda could make his first pre-season appearance this week, too.
