Cardiff City transfer headlines as Morison says more signings will increase competition and trialists score in game today

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Wednesday, July 20.

Morison: More signings will only increase competition

Steve Morison is delighted with the competition for places at Cardiff City and expects that to ramp up more with even more new bodies in the coming weeks.

City have brought in 12 players so far, 11 permanently and one on loan, but it is no secret they are in the market for forward players and strikers in particular.

Mark Harris and Max Watters are the only fit forward men as things stand, but the Bluebirds are understood to be working hard behind the scenes to get more new signings through the door. We understand things are heating up in that striker search now that Premier League clubs are back from their pre-season tours, on which some of Cardiff's targets were playing.

Meanwhile, though, the manager said he is happy with the current level of competition, but expects it to ramp up and believes that can only be a positive for his squad.

"I'm really happy," he said on Tuesday night. "We have got competition across the board. We will have more competition when a couple more new bodies come in. The lads have got to push each other. I don't have to do it, the competition speaks for itself. You look over your shoulder and you've got someone who wants your shirt.

"The staff have given us a new impetus as well. I'm really pleased. I thank the board and Vincent (Tan) for getting behind me and giving us the tools we need. They have been so supportive.

"I can't thank them enough. The staff have been great, all the way from recruitment to my immediate staff. Training has been excellent and the matches have been good so far. Hopefully we can top it off with a win on Saturday (against Swindon Town)."

Four trialists play for u21s

Four trialists started Cardiff City u21s' game in their demolition job of Bromley u23s on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bluebirds are looking to boost their youth ranks following a number of exits in the summer and will run the rule over a number of young players in the coming weeks.

Darren Purse's team to take on Bromley had four trialists included, as well as Siya Ligendza, the young striker whose contract ran out in the summer but is still training with the Bluebirds.

They ran out comfortable winners in the end, with two of the trialists actually getting on the scoresheet alongside Caleb Hughes, Tom Davies, Morgan Wigley, Siya Ligendza and a brace apiece for Joel Colwill and James Crole in the 10-1 triumph.

Cardiff City u21s XI : Luthra; McNamara, Trialist, Benjamin, Davies; Trialist, Trialist, Trialist; Jefferies, Ligendza, Hughes.

Subs : Semenyo, Turner, Jones, Clay, Ashford, Keeping, Kenniford, Wigley, J. Colwill, Crole.

Former Bluebird passes away

Former Cardiff City and Newport defender Graham Coldrick has sadly passed away at the age of 76.

The Newport-born Coldrick started out for City in 1963 before going on to make just shy of 100 appearances for the Bluebirds, before signing for his hometown club in 1970 for a fee of around £4,000, which was a club record at the time.

After making more than 150 appearances for Newport he finished his career at Merthyr Tydfil, joining in 1975. He was inducted into Newport's hall of fame in 2015.

"Our thoughts this morning are with the family, friends and team-mates of former Bluebird, Graham Coldrick who passed away earlier this week," Cardiff wrote in a statement.

"Graham made close to a hundred appearances for City between 1963 and 1970. Forever a Bluebird."

Cardiff told West Brom man 'a good signing'

The loan capture of Cedric Kipre from West Brom has been branded "a good signing" by former Baggies and England midfielder Carlton Palmer.

Kipre has been impressive in his two pre-season outings for Cardiff and seems like he will slot into Steve Morison's new brand of play very nicely. And, as Palmer says, where the centre-back is in his career, the move appears to make sense for all concerned.

"Yeah, I think it’s a good move for both parties. I mean, he’s obviously not in Steve’s plans, so it makes sense for the club to move him on," Palmer told Football League World. “He’s been on loan before, he hasn’t gone on a permanent deal.

“He’s just gone on a season-long loan. So that tells you where West Brom and Steve Bruce place him in terms of their long-term thinking and plans.”

Bagan: I'm enjoying new style much more

Cardiff City defender Joel Bagan has said he is enjoying playing this new brand of football in pre-season.

The Bluebirds' marked shift to have more of the ball and win it back quickly out of possession is seeing them dominate games far more than fans have been accustomed to in recent seasons.

It is only pre-season, and there will be teething problems, but the build-up play has been encouraging so far and Bagan is certainly happy with what's been going on.

"It’s a new way of playing, and I think everyone’s taken to it. We’re having a lot more of the ball than we did a lot of the time last season," Bagan said after the 0-0 draw with Shrewsbury Town.

"I’m enjoying it a lot more. I’m getting forward more, creating chances, and trying to get a few more goals.

"There's a lot of new boys, and I think the main thing is just getting used to them. All of them are comfortable on the ball, so it makes it easier to play with them."
