Cardiff City to appoint Mick McCarthy as new manager following Neil Harris sacking

Cardiff City will appoint Mick McCarthy as their new manager, WalesOnline has learned.

The Bluebirds announced on Thursday that Neil Harris and assistant David Livermore had been relieved of their duties following a miserable run of form which has left them 13 points off the play-offs past the halfway mark in the season.

The club have moved quickly to appoint Harris' successor, though, with the announcement of McCarthy expected either on Friday night or Saturday.

It is understood there were a number of candidates who have applied and been contacted following Harris' departure, but City have landed on McCarthy, who most recently managed Cypriot side APOEL before leaving earlier this month.

The two-time Republic of Ireland manager, 61, has won promotion with both Sunderland and Wolves during his managerial career.

And he has a serious task ahead of him if he is to get this Bluebirds side within a sniff of promotion his term.

City are low on confidence but have a squad with clear talent, which has seen investment in this window and the summer window despite Vincent Tan's leisure business having been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

There is still time left in this current window for the Bluebirds to do business, however focus must now be on using the players at his disposal to gain momentum and catapult the team up the table towards the play-offs before it is too late.
