Cardiff City striker Robert Glatzel to undergo medical at Mainz as Middlesbrough dealt blow

Cardiff City striker Robert Glatzel is set to join Bundesliga club Mainz on loan for the rest of the season.

It's understood the player has travelled for a medical in his homeland ahead of Germany's 17:00 GMT transfer deadline, having previously been linked with a reunion with former boss Neil Warnock at Middlesbrough.

The striker's exit will immediately spark questions over a possible replacement, with speculation over a move for Jordan Rhodes yet to be dismissed by those in the capital.

The recent injury to new signing Max Watters means Mick McCarthy is arguably now a little thin on forward options heading into the second half the season, and it remains to be see whether the club will make any late moves.

Glatzel joined Cardiff from Heidenheim back in July 2019 for a fee of £5.5m, and has since made 51 league appearances for the Bluebirds, but has largely found game-time hard to come by this term.

The form of Kieffer Moore, who netted his 10th goal in the 1-1 draw with Millwall at the weekend, and the emergence of young Mark Harris, has seen Glatzel's chances become increasingly limited.

The 27-year-old has been restricted to just eight Championship starts this season, although he has nevertheless managed three goals this campaign.
