Cardiff City star Joe Bennett posts horrendous picture after Sheffield Wednesday head injury

Cardiff City's Joe Bennett has revealed the true extent of the injury which forced him off against Sheffield Wednesday.

During the first half at Hillsborough, both Bennett and team-mate Junior Hoilett leaped to head the same ball, only for them both to collide mid-air.

It looked a nasty coming together and the gravity of the situation hit when both teams' medical staffs rushed over to administer treatment.

While Hoilett appeared to shake it off, walking away gingerly, Bennett had no such luck.

His game was cut short in the 35th minute when he was carried off on a stretcher, leaving many to wonder how serious the damage actually was.

However, he revealed in a Twitter post after the game that he had suffered no fracture to his skull, but the picture alongside the post made for pretty grim viewing.

Bennett has been a mainstay of the Bluebirds backline this season and returned to the starting XI in fine fashion against Millwall on Boxing Day.

He was also dealing well with the very real threat of Jacob Murphy down Wednesday's right-hand side before his afternoon was cut short on Sunday.

Boss Neil Harris and the player himself will both be hoping it heals quickly, while swathes of Bluebirds fans took to social media to wish the defender a speedy recovery.

That was not the way he was hoping to end his 2019, that's for sure!
