Cardiff City star has car smashed up and broken into on the eve of Leeds United clash

Cardiff City's Nathaniel Mendez-Laing had his car smashed up and broken into on the eve of the Bluebirds' Championship return against Leeds United.

The winger has battled back from a terrible hamstring injury to force his way into contention for the Bluebirds' first match back following a three-month enforced break.

And while the eve of the clash will have doubtless been filled with excitement in anticipation of his return to action, it was marred when the front and back windows of the his car were smashed in.

The 28-year-old was staying at the Mercure Hotel on Newport Road in Cardiff on the eve of the match. It is understood this was the case because he lives away from the Cardiff area.

He wrote on Instagram: "Somebody broke into my car outside Mercure Hotel, Newport Road, Cardiff, if anybody hears anything lemme know."

With his car incapacitated, Mendez-Laing was forced to order a taxi to Cardiff City Stadium ahead of the match with the Championship leaders.

Welsh boxer Joe Cordina on Friday night posted a photo of a gold Rolex watch, saying it had been stolen alongside a Burberry jacket on Newport Road.

He later told WalesOnline these belongings were taken in the alleged raid of Mendez-Laing's car.

Mendez-Laing was named on the bench for the match before coming on to assist Robert Glatzel for the second goal in the 2-0 win.

A South Wales Police statement read: "Shortly before 8.30pm last night police in Cardiff responded to a report of criminal damage to a car which was parked near the Mercure Hotel on Newport Road."
