Cardiff City snap up third summer signing as Yakou Meite admits Bluebirds move was an easy decision

Cardiff City have signed former Reading forward Yakou Meite on a two-year deal.

The forward joins as a free agent after seeing his contract in Berkshire expire following seven years with the Royals, who were relegated from the Championship last season.

And despite having interest from the UK and overseas, the 27-year-old, who can operate both as a striker and a wide player, said it was an easy decision to move to south Wales.

“I’m delighted to be here," Meite said. "It wasn’t a difficult decision to join Cardiff City once they came in for me.

"I’ve had many conversations with the manager, and I very much liked what I heard from him and the project he wanted to achieve at this club. I’ve always liked playing here at the stadium and cannot wait to do so for Cardiff City.”

The Bluebirds have already announced the signings of Ike Ugbo and Dimitrios Goutas this week as Erol Bulut tries to mould this squad in his vision.

Bulut will hope Meite adds goals and assists next season, with the manager intent on adding firepower to City's frontline this summer after the club finished the Championship's second-lowest goalscorers last season.

The signing of Meite sees him join the likes of Kion Etete, Callum Robinson, Isaak Davies, Max Watters and, of course, Ugbo as the club's recognised senior striker options.

Bulut said: "It’s a great signing for us. He will help us a lot with his power and his speed. We are really very satisfied that he’s signed for us.

"He has played the last five or six years in the Championship, so he knows the league very well. He knows how to score goals, which is very important for us. It will take a little bit of time, but it’s good that he’s come here with one month to go until the league begins. We will get him ready for then."

The Ivory Coast international, 27, was reared in the Paris Saint-Germain academy and made one Ligue 1 appearance before moving to Reading in 2016.

Meite hit double figures in the Championship for three successive seasons between 2018 and 2021. He subsequently suffered a cruciate ligament rupture which kept him out for almost seven months the following campaign. He scored four goals for the Royals last term.
