Cardiff City sign Charlton's Dillon Phillips on permanent deal amid Middlesbrough and Birmingham interest

Cardiff City have announced the signing of goalkeeper Dillon Phillips on a permanent deal from Charlton Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

Phillips, who signs on a three-year deal, had been a player who has been on the radar for a number of months, however it took until late on deadline day to get a move over the line.

Phillips will presumably come in as back-up for Alex Smithies, who had a tremendous season last year, at Cardiff City Stadium.

The 25-year-old is thought of highly at Charlton and is believed to be a long-term solution for Cardiff City, whose current senior goalkeepers Smithies and Joe Day are over 30 years of age.

Phillips, a product of the Addicks academy, rose through the ranks at the London club and has become a mainstay between the sticks at The Valley in the last two years and was voted the club's Player of the Season in the Championship last year.

It is understood that both Birmingham, who signed Neil Etheridge from Cardiff City earlier this summer, and Middlesbrough were keen on the goalkeeper, too.

“I’m over the moon to be here. I’m excited for the challenge now," Phillips said.

“I’m coming in to compete with the other two goalkeepers and I’m looking forward to the challenge.

“It’s exciting for me. It’s a big step and I’m looking forward to cracking on.”

Phillips becomes the fifth signing of the window after Kieffer Moore, Sheyi Ojo, Jordi Osei-Tutu and fellow deadline day recruit Harry Wilson.
