Cardiff City's transfer stance on Sheffield Wednesday ace revealed after Mick McCarthy's telling verdict

Cardiff City have not made any approach to sign Sheffield Wednesday playmaker Josh Windass, according to reports in Yorkshire.

This week it was claimed that the Bluebirds were ramping up their efforts to sign the Owls star, who has impressed with nine goals this season amid a miserable campaign for the Hillsborough club.

It will be Mick McCarthy's first summer transfer window at the helm in the Welsh capital and there is a sense that there could be change afoot.

However, according to our sister title YorkshireLive, Cardiff have made no such approach to sound out the possibility of signing the playmaker this summer.

The Bluebirds will lose Harry Wilson following this weekend's final fixture against Rotherham, with the Wales international set to head back to his parent club Liverpool.

Wilson has been one of City's better players all season and his departure was expected to throw up something of a conundrum for McCarthy this summer, with many believing the club would have to dip into the market to bolster their options in that position.

But McCarthy threw his backing behind Jonny Williams, who he believes is the "perfect" replacement for the returning Wilson next season.

"Jonny Williams is a perfect replacement for that," McCarthy said.

"Rubin Colwill is as well, actually, that's where he played in the under-23s and he's more than capable of that.

"Is he Harry Wilson? No, he's not, because he's not been to Hull and Derby and Bournemouth and Cardiff in the Championship.

"But Jonny, certainly, has got the ability to do that. So I'm not actively going out seeking for one of those."

It tallies up, then, that McCarthy might not be going hell for leather to sign a playmaker as soon as the transfer window flings open.

Indeed, with Williams, Colwill and potentially Lee Tomlin in situ, it appears that the manager believes he has enough options at his disposal in that position to mount a promotion charge next term.

Whether the potential relegation of Sheffield Wednesday will change the manager's stance, perhaps only time will tell.

But Windass' father, Dean, has confirmed that several clubs have already expressed an interest in his son.

“I know that there are a few clubs who are obviously potentially after him," Windass Snr said this week.

“But it’s sort of annoyed him really, because it was before Saturday’s game – probably one of the biggest games of the season – and he is getting all these clubs linked that they’re going to sign him if Sheffield Wednesday go down.

"He’s not that sort of lad to think about that and he was focused on the job on Saturday."
