Cardiff City's stance on Derby County goalkeeper Ryan Allsop and what it means for Dillon Phillips

Cardiff City are not in talks to sign Derby County goalkeeper Ryan Allsop, WalesOnline has been told.

The Bluebirds took an interest in the player when they were lining up a replacement for Alex Smithies, who leaves Cardiff following the expiration of his contract next month, with the Rams shot stopper drawn up on a short list in recent months.

Allsop is wanted by many Championship teams, but recently pledged his allegiance to the Pride Park outfit last month. Speaking to the BBC, he said: “I’ve loved my time here and I don’t want that to end,” adding that he "hopes to get something sorted in the summer".

Uncertainty surrounding Derby players is set to be a continued theme this summer, with a takeover still in the offing. manager Wayne Rooney said: "I can say 95% of the players in there I would want to keep, but what I can't do is tell them what the salary will be.

"The players who are out of contract, I know there are other clubs sniffing round them and putting salaries in front of them which unfortunately sometimes that is what it takes."

In the meantime, of course, with that uncertainty shrouding the Allsop situation, Cardiff zeroed in on a target they really wanted to bring to the Welsh capital in the form of Jak Alnwick, who has signed for the Bluebirds with his contract at St Mirren finishing next month. They identified Alnwick's skills not only as a goalkeeper but with the ball at his feet as key attributes which will play into Steve Morison's hands next term as he looks to mould his team into his own vision this summer.

The fact the Allsop reports were dredged up again at the weekend appeared to throw shades of uncertainty from some supporters over Dillon Phillips' future at the club.

However, a source at Cardiff has told WalesOnline "Dillon isn't going anywhere", thus finally putting to bed those burgeoning rumours of the 26-year-old's potential departure.

Phillips has had to bide his time and wait patiently for his opportunity, with Alex Smithies largely preferred as City's first choice since the player's arrival from Charlton in 2020. The club, however, are happy with Phillips and new signing Alnwick and both will battle it out for the No.1 spot next season.
