Cardiff City's Callum Paterson called up to Scotland squad after Sheffield United and ex-Swansea City striker Oli McBurnie withdraws

Cardiff City's Callum Paterson has been drafted into the Scotland squad to replace former Swansea City striker Oli McBurnie for this Friday's clash with Israel.

It means Paterson will be another absentee for the Bluebirds for this weekend's season opener against Northampton Town in the Carabao Cup, with a number of City players away on international duty.

However, it has long been an ambition for the forward to break back into the Scotland fold, having not turned out for his country since a European Championship qualifier against San Marino back in March last year.

He enjoyed another decent season in a City shirt last year, having a purple patch in front of goal just after the New Year, but failed to keep a regular starting spot under Neil Harris.

The call-up to Steve Clarke's squad will be a timely boost for the versatile forward, who will hope to show his club manager just what he can do following the arrival of Kieffer Moore this summer and big-money signing Robert Glatzel also vying for a starting spot.

Scotland face Israel in their Nations League opener this Friday before taking on Czech Republic next week.

McBurnie, who left the Swans for Sheffield United a year ago in a £20million deal, and Dundee United's Lawrence Shankland are the two forwards to have pulled out of the Scotland squad.

Paterson, who has 13 caps to his name, has largely operated at right back for his country, however it is thought he will be brought in to reinforce the forward line over the coming week.
