Cardiff City release Gary Madine after striker failed to score in two years at the club

Gary Madine has left Cardiff City by mutual consent, the club have confirmed.

The striker was signed from Bolton Wanderers for £6m back in January 2016, however he failed to score during his two-year stint at the Bluebirds.

He enjoyed something of a little resurgence when Neil Harris took over back in November, with the manager placing his faith in him while Robert Glatzel was sidelined with injury.

However, he failed to really seize his chance and was once again consigned to the bench during the festive period, and it appears the right time for all parties for Madine to leave the club.

The 29-year-old, who had 18 months left to run on his deal, failed to score in 28 games in all competitions for the Bluebirds.

"Cardiff City Football Club can confirm that Gary Madine has left the Bluebirds by mutual consent," the club said in a short statement.

"We'd like to thank Gary for his efforts since joining the Club in January 2018 and wish him well with his future career."

While there are yet to be any signings, the manager's priority was always to streamline the squad this month before bringing in some fresh faces.

Madine is now the third player off the wage bill after Armand Traore's contract wasn't renewed and Ciaron Brown put pen to paper on a loan deal up at Livingston for the rest of the season.
