Cardiff City predicted XI for possible Leeds United clash has two major fitness boosts

Cardiff City are expected to profit from the Championship’s hiatus with two major fitness boosts for the potential visit of Leeds United on June 20.

On Sunday night, EFL confirmed it was aiming for fixtures to resume across the weekend of June 20 providing various regulations were met.

With the Bluebirds and Whites set to play each other in their next match before the season was suspended, there is a possibility that will be their first game back in less than three weeks.

Jean-Kevin Augustin has been the big winner during this hiatus at Thorp Arch as he has been given the time to recover from a hamstring injury and return to fitness.

However, while Augustin will almost certainly remain an option on the bench when the campaign restarts, Cardiff are set to be boosted by two bona fide starters.

Cardiff City correspondent Glen Williams, who writes for LeedsLive’s sister title Wales Online, has provided his expected XI for that curtain-raiser later this month.

He expects attacking midfielders Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Lee Tomlin to return from injury and start in that first game after speaking to manager Neil Harris.

Over the weekend, Harris said: "Mendez-Laing has come back into the full group instantly.

"He has had two full days training with the group, which is fantastic and he looks in great shape.

"Lee is slightly further away because he has had less contact time with the physios before lockdown.

"Lee is doing pretty much everything the players are doing, but he's just doing it in his own different environment at the moment.

“We are hoping to have him back in the group, full training, possibly next week.

“We are certainly hoping Tomlin and Mendez-Laing will both be available for the next game of the season, when that comes about.

“Whether it's that they are ready to start a game or not, but we are hopeful they can have some impact from the bench.

"We are not putting too much pressure on them, but it is a positive, they are two very popular players and it's great to have them back, they are vital to success for us.

"Given the difficult time we've had, it's nice to share that good news."

Mendez-Laing ruptured a hamstring in late December and was expected to miss the rest of the season, while Tomlin suffered a serious knee injury in February with an eight-week lay-off.

Predicted Cardiff XI: Alex Smithies; Dion Sanderson, Sean Morrison, Curtis Nelson, Joe Bennett; Will Vaulks, Leandro Bacuna; Mendez-Laing, Tomlin, Junior Hoilett; Callum Paterson.
