Cardiff City player ratings v Bristol Rovers as Robinson, Tanner and O'Dowda all stick their hands up

Game 1

Ryan Allsop 5

Had hearts in mouths when he ran 30 yards from goal to try and nick the ball from Jevani Brown. It worked out for him in the end, but was dicey.

Perry Ng 6

Was really high up the pitch when City were in possession and added another dimension to the attack. His defensive nous nicked the ball which led to Robinson's goal.

Mark McGuinness 6

Had to make a couple of big interventions when City were spread by the visitors early doors.

Jack Simpson 5

Part of that left-hand side of defence which struggled early doors, but was more solid after that. Hit a couple of errant passes but also some big diagonals, too.

Joel Bagan 5

Was pulled out of position a couple of times and Rovers enjoyed a bit of territory down his flank. Did better as the afternoon progressed.

Andy Rinomhota 5

Cardiff lacked enough creativity from their midfielders, he and Ralls in there is not the starting combo for that. Solid, but Cardiff needed more in there.

Joe Ralls 6

Had one shot from 25 yards deflected over before making a good run into the box and hitting a low cross, which was blocked. Another who did better the longer the game went on.

Kieron Evans 5

Had a difficult start, with Rovers targeting that side of the pitch, but grew into it a little. Played a lovely pass to release Ralls but it came to nothing. Far more effective when the game opened up.

Callum Robinson 7 (star man)

Probably the pick of Cardiff's attacking players early on, provided that zip when City were searching for some impetus. Took his chance so well, smashing home from 20 yards after a driving run.

Sheyi Ojo 6

Picked the ball up in decent areas but what happened next was a mixed bag. Put a lovely cross into Etete, which was headed over the bar. Credited with the assist for Robinson's goal, too.

Kion Etete 4

Like the first couple of games, really, struggling to hit the heights Cardiff will want from him. Still looks to be feeling his way back to his best. Headed over from five yards out and really should have scored it. Just didn't happen for him.

Game 2

Jak Alnwick 6

Came out and tipped a cross away from danger and that's really all he had to do. Was assured with the ball at his feet.

Mahlon Romeo 6

Doesn't quite take to this new role as seamlessly as Ng, but still a really good option and contender for that right-back spot. No frills but dependable enough.

Dimitrios Goutas 6

Only a 30-minute outing, but a lot to like. His voice boomed around the stadium and his composure on the ball and range of distribution were noteworthy.

Xavier Benjamin 5

Stood up to Rovers' attackers fairly well and stymied a couple of attacks. Made one error in the second period which almost allowed John Marquis in.

Jamilu Collins 5

Understandably there was a little ring-rust with the odd misplaced or overhit pass, but no howlers. Just feeling his way back into it. Again, taken off after 30 minutes.

Ebou Adams 7

Looked to express himself a little more in this game, which is a positive sign. Put in some full-blooded tackles late on, which was encouraging to see. Very combative in there, a good foil for Wintle.

Ryan Wintle 7

Looked as calm and as in control as you'd like. An important player for City going forward and defensively. Highlighted how much they missed him in the first game.

Ollie Tanner 8 (star man)

What else can the lad do? Took his chance brilliantly, stroking home first time, and made a number of runs in behind to trouble defenders. Also showed his playmaking ability with some nice passes and crosses. Three goals in three games.

Rubin Colwill 6

Had one golden chance when he spun his defender in the box, but his low shot was blocked. Tidy enough once again.

Callum O'Dowda 7

As if he had never been away. A top performance from the winger, playing higher up than he was last season. Skinned his opposite number a few times and hit some dangerous low crosses, one of which was turned home by Tanner. Taken off after 30 minutes.

Ike Ugbo 5

Didn't really get much of a sniff. When he did have one chance, again courtesy of an O'Dowda cross, he fluffed his first shot and the second was saved well. Off after 30 minutes.

SUBS

Isaak Davies (O'Dowda 30) 5 - Made a few late runs which stretched the defence, but didn't have a massive impact.

Vontae Campbell (Collins 30) 5 - Was left sprawling once or twice but nothing too detrimental.

Eli King (Goutas 30) 5 - Again, not a particularly familiar position for him, at centre-back, but was not fazed and was reliable.

Max Watters (for Ugbo 30') 5 - Was played through by Tanner but let the chance go begging. A bit more confidence and it would have found the back of the net. Had another late effort saved from close range, too.

Joel Colwill (Rubin Colwill 47) - A couple of nice touches in midfield, but didn't have bags of time to really impose himself.

Tom Davies (Benjamin 47) 5 - Like above, really.
