Cardiff City's Tom Sang loving loan life with St Johnstone

Cardiff City loan man Tom Sang says he is loving his time with loan club St Johnstone.

Sang is spending the second half of the season north of the border in order to get game-time under his belt.

The 22-year-old has featured twice for his new club so far, with his performance against Hearts at the weekend putting him in among the man-of-the-match conversation, such was his display.

Sang played at right wing-back, a position he clearly favours, but is at odds with where his permanent manager sees his future.

Morison feels the former Manchester United product is better suited to a midfield role, saying before he departed on loan: "I’ve had the conversation with Tom, I personally don’t see him as a wing back.

"I see him as a midfield option.

"That’s where he has got to fight for his place along with the other midfielders. That’s my opinion.

"At the minute, my opinion is that I didn’t see him as direct competition for Perry (Ng), Joel (Bagan) or Ryan Giles when he was here.

"So, he is in the mix with the other five or six centre midfielders. It’s a tough place to be because there’s a lot of good players there."

Those comments put his long-term future at Cardiff in focus, especially in light of what Sang said at the weekend following the 2-1 win over the Edinburgh side.

It's clear he likes to bomb forward from his defensive berth and despite saying he's prepared to play anywhere, his favoured position is obvious.

“When we have comfortable possession, I need to help out in attack," he said.

“Their forwards liked to cheat and stay high so that they could counter quickly.

“When the ball was on the opposite side, I had to be a bit deeper and a bit more intelligent about where I put myself.

“It was about noticing when we had strong possession and then I could join in.

“I’ve played all my professional games at Cardiff at right wing-back. As a player, attribute-wise, I think that is where I have the best potential.

“Callum Davidson saw my games last year so he thinks the same as I do.

“But if I need to play centre midfield, I’ll do the same job and will enjoy it just as much."

At this stage of his career, game-time is of paramount importance and even though he's only been with the Scottish outfit for a few weeks, Sang says he is enjoying his time up there.

Playing as much as possible can only be a good thing, for all concerned.

“It was my first game at McDiarmid Park and was a massive win against a team that is right up there in the league," he added.

"It’s massive. I really enjoyed it.

“I loved it. Loved it. I just love getting out there, playing and helping the team get out of this position. That’s what it’s about. I love playing.

“Firstly, I want to try and get the team further up the table.

“On a personal level, I want to get as much experience as I can and play in the big games. I want to play as many games as I can."

One suspects that a conversation will need to be had when Sang returns to the Welsh capital this summer.

Perry Ng appears to have been shifted into a back three defensive department, which would free-up a spot for Sang at wing-back. The impact Cody Drameh has made since his arrival from Leeds United has been marked, and Morison has already hinted - perhaps more in hope than expectation - that he'd like to keep the loanee beyond this season.

If Sang can keep impressing in his favoured position in Scotland, he may find a home at wing-back in south Wales.
