Cardiff City linked with move for Aston Villa ace amid interest from Middlesbrough and Bristol City

Cardiff City are reportedly among a clutch of Championship clubs interested in signing Aston Villa right-back Frederic Guilbert.

The Bluebirds are in the market for a right-back this month, having already submitted a bid believed to be worth around £250,000 for Crewe Alexandra captain Perry Ng.

Now, though, Football Insider claim the Bluebirds, along with Championship rivals Middlesbrough and Bristol City, are taking an interest in Frenchman Guilbert.

It is claimed that Premier League outfit Villa are keen to allow the 26-year-old to head out on loan for the second half of the season, with the player's only two appearances this season having been in the Carabao Cup.

Guilbert reportedly turned down a move to Turkish outfit Istanbul Basaksehir earlier at the beginning of the month, putting teams in this country on red alert to his availability.

Villa are thought to be keen on Guilbert getting some first-team action, with Matty Cash and Ahmed Elmohamady blocking his path to the starting XI at Villa Park, with the play having made just 31 appearances for the club since signing from French club Caen in January 2019.

The stumbling block for Cardiff here, one suspects, is the Midlands club's desire to let him leave only on loan.

Cardiff, who have Jordi Osei-Tutu on loan from Arsenal, are keen on signing a longer-term occupant of that right-back berth on a permanent basis, believing it to be unwise to have two players in the same position on a temporary basis.

That is the reason, WalesOnline understands, the club opted against bringing Dion Sanderson back on loan from Wolves this term.

Whether Cardiff are exploring the option of Villa allowing the player to leave on a permanent basis remains to be seen. However, the pursuit of Crewe defender Ng is certainly not off the table either, just yet.
