Cardiff City legend Peter Whittingham hospitalised with head injury after 'accidental fall' at pub

Former Cardiff City midfielder Peter Whittingham is in hospital fighting for his life.

South Wales Police have confirmed Whittingham is in hospital, responding to speculation spread on social media that the 35-year-old had passed away by confirming he is alive and in a critical condition.

Whittingham sustained injuries after an “accidental fall” at a pub in Barry on 7 March.

A police statement read: ”At around 10pm on March 7, South Wales Police were called to a licensed premises in Barry,” a statement read.

“A 35-year-old man from Penarth suffered a head injury as a result of a fall and remains at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff.

“At this stage there is no evidence or suggestion of a criminal act, and it appears the injury was caused by an accidental fall.

“Enquiries are continuing into the circumstances of the incident.”

Whittingham, who began his career with Aston Villa, retired from the game in 2018, following a spell with Blackburn Rovers.

Whittingham made 457 appearances for the Blue Birds across 11 seasons, scoring 96 goals.

A £350,000 signing from Villa in 2007, Whittingham also made 17 appearances for England Under-21s.

He also made had loan spells with Burnley and Derby County over the course of his 15 years as a professional.​
