Cardiff City keen to land former Chelsea starlet and England under-21 defender, but face competition from Stoke City

Cardiff City have shown an interest in England under-21 defender Jonathan Panzo, but could face competition for his signature this month.

Panzo, who came through the youth ranks at Chelsea, is currently with Dijon in France and previously enjoyed short spells at Monaco and Cercle Brugge.

It seems he could now potentially be on the move to the Championship this month.

Sources have told WalesOnline that Cardiff are one of several sides to have shown an interest, although Stoke City are also understood to be keen admirers.

It's not yet clear just how far the Bluebirds have taken their interest at this stage, but it's claimed that initial discussions have begun.

There would clearly be a long way to go before any move is completed, but a loan with the option to buy is understood to be the most likely outcome if Cardiff are successful in their bid to bring the 21-year-old to South Wales.

While primarily a centre-back, Panzo is capable of playing in a left-back role, and it's that versatility that may make him an attractive option for the Bluebirds.

An option at left wing-back is one of Steve Morison's key priorities in this window following the departure of Ryan Giles, who has returned to Wolves.

However, while Cardiff are working hard, there doesn't appear to be an imminent breakthrough as things stand.

"We have got a few irons in the fire, a few things we are trying to do," Morison said when quizzed on potential deals ahead of this weekend.

"That's not with anyone going out. It’ll be loans, but nothing is going to happen right now."
