Cardiff City keen on goalkeeper linked with Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury Town

Cardiff City are reportedly interested in Newport County's Joe Day.

The BBC report that the Bluebirds are interested in signing the goalkeeper, with speculation over the future of current stopper Neil Etheridge.

It would come as a blow to Bristol Rovers supporters, with many Gasheads having been keen to see Day move to the Memorial Stadium.

Day is out of contract at Newport and looks set to leave the club, with Millwall keeper Tom King signing on at Rodney Parade.

The Gas are still on the search for a goalkeeper, despite signing Dutch giant Jordi van Stappershoef earlier this month.

They had been linked with Day after news emerged that the keeper had turned down Shrewsbury Town, but there now appears to be Championship interest in the 28-year-old, who began his career in Crystal Palace's youth system.

The signing of van Stappershoef has taken a bit of pressure off the goalkeeping position for the Gas, but they still need a second senior stopper to compete with the Dutchman for the No. 1 shirt.

Speaking to BBC Radio Bristol, Rovers boss Graham Coughlan did not reveal whether van Stappershoef would be first choice this season.

He said: "I say to all players, not just my goalkeepers, that there's 11 jerseys there and it's your decision, so you go and decide.

"You go and work your socks off and command whatever jersey you want - the opportunity to become the club's number one will be available to him and what he does from there is up to himself.

"We will look to bring in another goalkeeper, a one and a two, and how the one and the two evolves and how it works out will be entirely up to the two goalkeepers to battle it out and find out what position they command."
