Cardiff City headlines as ex-Sheffield United boss spotted at Fulham, Wolves 'delighted' with transfer and Warnock responds to Middlesbrough trolls

These are your Cardiff City headlines on Thursday, October 21.

Wilder watches Bluebirds

Former Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder was in the stands to watch Cardiff take on Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday night.

Wilder has been out of work since leaving Bramall Lane last season, with the Blades eventually relegated from the top flight.

The reasons for Wilder's attendance are unclear but the 54-year-old is likely keen to get back into management; it is not the only match he has spotted at - he also attended Hull City vs Stoke City three weeks ago.

With Mick McCarthy under pressure at Cardiff City Stadium, Wilder may just be keeping an eye on developments across the division but his presence created a bit of chat among the support base.

McCarthy said of his situation after last night's 2-0 defeat: "It leaves me on the back end of a really horrible run of results.

"And if football is true to its usual stuff then we know what happens.

"I came in on the back of a defeat by Swansea, we've certainly had a much better performance, and I'll be doing exactly the same for Middlesbrough unless I'm told different.

"I can’t do any more than what I’m doing. I certainly can’t try harder than I am. TC and I are giving it everything."

Wolves pleased with Giles' progress

Premier League outfit Wolves are reportedly pleased with Ryan Giles' progress at Cardiff.

The youngster joined the south Wales side on loan for the 2021/22 campaign and has arguably been their best player to date.

It has been a disastrous opening quarter to the season, with the Bluebirds on a seven-game losing streak, but one of their shining lights has been Giles.

When available his link-up with Kieffer Moore has been encouraging to watch; The Athletic report that Cardiff were "specifically chosen" for Giles "as they play with width and a target man and it was felt that Giles would be one of the best crossers in the division".

He showcased that again against Fulham in midweek.

"Wolves are delighted with his progress," the report ends, which Bluebirds fans would concur with.

Wilson praises Bluebirds' first-half effort

Former Bluebirds loan man Harry Wilson says he thought Cardiff played well against his side in the first half in west London.

Wilson knows all about the Bluebirds, having spent last term in the Welsh capital.

And he was left impressed with the way the Cottagers broke down a determined effort from the away side after the break at Craven Cottage.

"Going into the game, we knew it was going to be a tough game," he said.

"We know that they’re not in the best run of form at the minute, but that could have changed for them tonight so we were desperate to make sure we went out there and got the win to follow up the win we got at the weekend. First half was tough. We created chances, but I thought they played well. Second half, it was a great strike from TC (Tom Cairney) and then that set us on the way and we could have had quite a few more.

“There was a bit of water on the pitch but we said at half-time we just need to keep moving the ball, keep them working and the chances will appear. I think once we got the first that settled us down and we got the second and, as I said, we probably could have got a few more. At the other end, Marek makes a good save at 2-0 and if they score then it would have been a nervy last 10 minutes or so."

Warnock silences trolls

Next up for the Bluebirds is Neil Warnock's Middlesbrough.

Boro visit Cardiff City Stadium on the back of two wins, but it hasn't all been sweetness and light for the former Cardiff boss on Teesside this season.

A small section of the fanbase were calling for Warnock's head a few weeks ago, but the veteran has taken it all in his stride.

"It does feel like we’ve clawed it back a bit," he said after Wednesday's 2-0 win over Barnsley.

“But I still look back at Blackburn and Blackpool and Hull and wonder how we haven’t got nine or ten more points than we’ve got…

"Those moments at the end, that's why I'm still in the game.

"You don't want the season to just fade away like it looked like it was going to do.

"We are short of players so all credit to the lads. They've knuckled down and training has been a joy to watch.

"It's always like that in football though. I've been in the game long enough to know. The fans have been brilliant with me when I go around town or to James Cook. They're brilliant with me.

"You get it everywhere though - the minority online. They'll go back in their holes for a bit. But that's life, that's football management."
