Cardiff City headlines as coronavirus outbreak wreaks fixture havoc and ex-player finds new club

Here are your Cardiff City headlines for Monday, December 20.

Bluebirds' Boxing Day clash off

Cardiff City's Boxing Day clash with Coventry City has been postponed after the Bluebirds informed the EFL they would be unable to field a squad because of a Covid-19 outbreak in camp.

It is the second game in succession which has had to be rearranged after last weekend's fixture with Derby County was called off on Friday due to coronavirus cases in both camps.

That has continued into this week and, despite being six days out from the match, Cardiff told the league's governing body on Monday lunchtime they would be unable to fulfil the fixture.

A new date for the match, which was due to be held at Cardiff City Stadium, will be rearranged in due course.

"Following consultation with the EFL, Cardiff City regret to announce that Boxing Day’s fixture with Coventry City has been postponed due to several cases of COVID-19 within the playing squad and staff," Cardiff's statement read.

Charlton match postponed

Cardiff City under-23s' match against Charlton Athletic on Monday has been postponed.

The Bluebirds were meant to take on the young Addicks on Monday afternoon in the Professional Development League 2, with Cardiff aiming to stretch their lead at the top of the table.

Cardiff have won 11 of their first 12 matches of the season and were hoping to continue that momentum against the London club, but unfortunately the match is off.

No reason has yet been announced, however given the current troubles regarding the surge in coronavirus cases leading to postponements across the board in recent days, that likely has something to do with it.

"Charlton U23s' Professional Development League 2 fixture with Cardiff City, set to have been played on Monday afternoon, has been postponed," Charlton wrote in a statement.

"The league clash with the Bluebirds was set to kick-off at 1pm at Princes Park, but has now been rearranged to take place on Monday, April 11."

Former Bluebird finds new club

Former Cardiff City defender Maximiliano Amondarain is on the move once again.

The blast from the past, who was signed by the Bluebirds after a successful trial following his departure from Uruguayan club Nacional back in 2013, signed a four-year deal for the club.

However, his contract was cut short in 2015 and terminated by mutual agreement. He has since played for Elche B, Barakaldo, Racing Montevideo, Progreso, Conquense, Orihuela and Rentistas.

However, on Sunday Peruvian club Alianza Atletico Sullana announced the Uruguayan, 28, as their new signing.

Alianza is the only Peruvian top-flight club which is situated outside of the country's capital, Lima.

Where are the U18s league winners now?

Looking back, perhaps the writing was on the wall for this sudden glut of talented youngsters sprouting through when Cardiff City under-18s won the Professional Development League South back in 2019.

That crop went on to beat the feted Leeds United academy side in the semi-final of the national competition, but ultimately lost narrowly to Sheffield Wednesday in the final.

Nevertheless, that feat by such a talented group was a pre-cursor for things to come.

Cardiff came out on top of the southern division, pipping Ipswich Town under-18s by one point to top the ladder in a dramatic climax to that 2018/19 campaign.

Here are the players who played a part in that magnificent campaign and where they are now...
