Cardiff City fans' overwhelming verdict on out-of-contract players as only one gets major backing and two split fanbase

Cardiff City fans have been asked for their verdict on the club’s out-of-contract stars - and have said they would release the majority of the seven players at the end of the season.

In a poll conducted by Bluebirds correspondent Glen Williams on Twitter, supporters have made their feelings clear on those with expiring deals.

The most agreed-on verdict was to release Connor Wickham. The striker joined the club in January on a short-term deal until the end of the season. He has one assist for the Bluebirds and is yet to score.

Bluebirds fans voted 81 per cent in favour to release him at the end of the term. The poll, however, comes after he angered a large section of the fan base in a video that emerged on social media after the South Wales derby which appeared to show him inhaling laughing gas. On Thursday morning, manager Sabri Lamouchi blasted the player's actions, calling them "absolutely stupid".

Eighty per cent also agreed they would release Gavin Whyte, who has been on the sidelines since the appointment of Lamouchi and indeed for much of his Cardiff career. The winger has only featured in one matchday squad since the Frenchman was made manager.

Another player who fans would release is Mark Harris, with 73 percent saying they would let go of the Wales international, who has spent his entire career with the Bluebirds aside from loan spells at Wrexham, Newport County and Port Vale. He has three goals to his name this season.

Deals for Tom Sang and Kieron Evans have split the fanbase. The vote saw 50.7 per cent saying they would release Sang, who also has not featured under Lamouchi despite making the bench in two of the last three matches. Evans has spent the season at Torquay United in the National League, netting two goals in 31 appearances but largely impressing. A total of 57 per cent of fans would see him leave at the end of his current deal.

Interestingly, fans of the Bluebirds would offer deals to Joel Bagan and Eli King. Bagan has not featured for Cardiff since the FA Cup replay loss to Leeds United in January, while King spent the first half of the season at Crewe Alexandra in League Two, featuring 19 times and scoring once.

King seems to be rated highly among the Bluebirds faithful; 73 per cent are in favour of giving him an extended deal, while 65 per cent would give Bagan a new contract.

Of course, these opinions may change when we find out what league Cardiff will be competing in next season, with budgets and standard of football both deciding factors in the clubs' ultimate decision on each player.
