Cardiff City fan unveils poignant tribute to Peter Whittingham with garden mural

A Cardiff City fan has had a stunning mural of Bluebirds legend Peter Whittingham painted on his garden wall.

Whittingham tragically died aged 35 back in March after suffering a head injury following a fall.

And now lifelong Cardiff fan Anthony Howe, from the Rhondda, has had a striking image of the late City legend stood inside Cardiff City Stadium painted on the wall outside his house in Cymmer.

"It's better than how I imagined it to be honest," he told WalesOnline.

Designed by local artist Tom Llewellyn of Tee2Sugars, the mural came about after Anthony had seen some of Tom's graffiti designs around the Rhondda.

"Me and my missus were talking one night and I said wouldn't it be cool to do something like that," he added.

"I wasn't expecting her to say yes, but she did! So we booked it in then."

And when it came to selecting a design, there was only one option when it became apparent it was going to involve a footballer.

"He asked us for a few designs. He said he'd put a player in front of the stadium, celebrating a goal.

"As soon as he said a player, I knew it had to be Peter Whittingham.

"He's a Cardiff City legend and I thought it would be perfect to have him on. He was my favourite player."

When Anthony posted the finished mural on social media, it was met with an overwhelming response.

"My phone has been mad," he said.

"I put it on around 2.30pm and it's been constant since. I put it on Twitter, Facebook and the Cardiff City away days pages.

"The responses have been amazing.

"As fans, we haven't really been able to pay our respects to him, so something like this was quite nice.

"It's funny that it was finished the day we played Blackburn, given Whittingham played for both clubs.

"It's strange how it worked out."

And are there any other walls Anthony might consider painting in the future?

"I might get Bartley, the Cardiff City mascot, on another wall for my kids."
