Cardiff City confirm loan signing of Leicester City's Filip Benkovic

Cardiff City have announced the loan capture of Leicester City centre back Filip Benkovic.

The Bluebirds allowed Aden Flint to leave for his own loan switch to Championship rivals Sheffield Wednesday on transfer deadline day and quickly sought to fill the void.

The Croatia international comes in to bolster the defensive ranks, hoping to break his way into the first team at Cardiff City Stadium having failed to really establish himself at Leicester following a £13m move from Dinamo Zagreb.

But he enjoyed a positive loan spell with Celtic two seasons ago, winning the treble up in Glasgow during his time there, before testing the waters in the Championship with a stint at Bristol City last term.

Sean Morrison and Curtis Nelson have struck up an excellent partnership at the heart of Cardiff City's defence and it will be difficult to oust one of them, one would think. That is why Flint sought a move away from the club.

Cardiff said late on Friday: "Filip links up with the Bluebirds for the entirety of the 2020/21 Championship campaign, subject to international clearance."

However, Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers on Friday insisted that Benkovic needed to go out and get some game time under his belt, so the 23-year-old is certainly coming to challenge for a first-team spot.

"The three players [Benkovic, Matty James, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall], there's movement around those guys going out," Rodgers said earlier on deadline day.

"It's important for those guys to get games for various reasons. We hope we can get them moves that they want and that we want."

Benkovic becomes the Bluebirds' sixth signing of the window after Kieffer Moore, Jordi Osei-Tutu, Sheyi Ojo, Harry Wilson and Dillon Phillips.
