Cardiff City complete the signing of former West Brom and Stoke City midfielder Romaine Sawyers

Cardiff City have made their 10th signing of the summer with the capture of free agent Romaine Sawyers.

The 30-year-old midfielder joins the Bluebirds on a two-year deal. He adds yet more depth to City's midfield department following the acquisitions of Andy Rinomhota and Ebou Adams, plus the bonus of Joe Ralls penning a new deal with the club.

WalesOnline first reported Cardiff's interest in Sawyers earlier this week, with his former loan club Stoke City also understood to have been interested in his signature. However, the Bluebirds have won the race in what appears to be a very shrewd acquisition.

“It’s good to finally get it over the line. I spoke to the gaffer, he explained the product that he’s got, and I feel like I want to be a part of it," Sawyers said. “The staff have been very welcoming, the players have been very welcoming, and it’s good to be back within a team.

“We’ve got a lot of young, energetic players. I’m one of the more senior ones, who is going to be here to try and add a bit of experience and know-how of the league.

“I like to get on the ball, and I want to get the team playing. I’ll try and chip in with a few goals and assists, and I like to bring others into play and put them in dangerous positions.”

It was always a position in which Cardiff needed some numbers after the departures of Leandro Bacuna, Marlon Pack, Will Vaulks and Manchester City loanee Tommy Doyle. But Sawyers represents a different addition to the others who have joined in that midfield department, bringing more creativity and guile to the middle of the park, an asset which was certainly needed and a player who will help lighten the creative load on Rubin Colwill's shoulders.

Clearly excited by the signing, Steve Morison said: "I’m sure everyone knows about Romaine and his qualities; he can be the difference in a game. He’s a top quality Championship midfielder, which adds to the top quality players we already have.

“He’s got undoubted quality to see a pass and make things happen. I’m very excited to have him on board, and I think the supporters should be as well.

“Obviously we can make five substitutions this season, and that will come into our thinking, so it’s worth having those extra bodies in every position we can. It creates great competition, and I’m really looking forward to seeing them all together.”

The 30-cap St Kitts and Nevis international scored three goals and provided four assists for the Potters last season. Having come through the Baggies' youth system, he went on to impress for Walsall in League One and Brentford in the Championship before sealing a return home to The Hawthorns in 2019.
