Cardiff City boss Neil Warnock gives injury update as two defenders suffer setbacks but experienced trio near full fitness

Cardiff City have been hit by a number of injury setbacks since the season began.

Here's the latest updates on the players currently out of action.

Jazz Richards and Matthew Connolly

Cardiff City defenders Jazz Richards and Matthew Connolly have suffered fresh injury setbacks during the international break.

The defensive duo have been missing since the start of the campaign after Richards picked up a knock in pre-season and Connolly underwent surgery on his ankle.

Both players were working their way back to full fitness and initial reports suggested they might miss only the first month of the season.

However, manager Neil Warnock has revealed Connolly had to go under the knife again in order to sort out his ankle problem, which is a massive blow for the centre back.

Richards has also had another knock, colliding with Aden Flint in training in the last week, which means he will, once again, be ruled out for a short while.

“Connolly has had an operation on his ankle to clear it out," Warnock said. "He just couldn’t get it right so they thought they better give it one last shot.

“Jazz has picked up another knock. He is so unlucky – just a challenge with Aden Flint. He has a swollen ankle. It’s been a bit like Casualty.”

Sol Bamba

There is more positive news regarding other long-term absentees.

We revealed that Sol Bamba is two months ahead of schedule and could return in just a couple of weeks after responding incredibly well to his rehabilitation programme.

Neil Etheridge and Marlon Pack

While Warnock also offered updates on Neil Etheridge and Marlon Pack, who are also nearing a return to the first-team fray.

“I was thinking of playing him on Monday (for the Under-23s) but the physios have slapped me on the wrist," Warnock said of Bamba. "It's a bit too early.

“Etheridge has trained this week so he is doing well and Pack is doing well as well. Etheridge is nearly there.

"If he’d had a game we could probably have involved him, but Alex Smithies has done all right so it is not vitally urgent.”
