Cardiff City boss Neil Harris 'expects more' from his wingers after frustrating Millwall draw

Cardiff City boss Neil Harris was left frustrated by his wide players against Millwall as he insisted he 'expects more' from them.

The Bluebirds were relatively toothless in attack against the Lions, coming away with a 1-1 draw after at the far post.

Harris concedes that this is a team in transition at present, trying to evolve from Neil Warnock's style of play to his own.

But one similarity between the two styles of play is how important wingers are in impacting the attack.

Harris wants to get the ball forward as quickly as possible to the wingers, but they have blown hot and cold in recent weeks and they simply have to produce more if City are to turn these draws into wins.

"We are creating chances," Harris said. "Thirteen today and several on target, but are they clear cut? Are we making them in open play?

"Do I want more from my wide players? Yeah I do. Do I expect more? Yes I do. That's the demand."

It was largely an afternoon of poor quality from both sides, especially in the final third.

The Bluebirds boss admitted it was difficult to find a way past Millwall, who have been brilliant on the road in recent weeks, and said it might have taken a moment of individual brilliance to do that.

A player certainly capable of doing that is Josh Murphy, who was left out against the Lions following a run of poor form.

It is unknown whether Murphy will be part of Harris' plans going forward, with the manager intent on reducing his squad size next month.

Harris did, however, say players with the ability to make a telling difference in the final third are costly, meaning any incomings in that department will surely see at least one winger leave the Welsh capital.

"In the final third, maybe that's when you need more moments, a bit of interplay, 1v1 ability," Harris added.

"We had it in moments. But did we have it enough? That's where we've got to be better.

"That costs money in the Championship.

"Overall, I'm pleased with the performance, but I'd like to see us create a little bit more in the final third."

The Bluebirds travel up to Hillsborough on Sunday in hope of earning their first win in four outings.
