Cardiff City boss Mick McCarthy makes Chris Hughton admission after defeating Nottingham Forest

By Matt Lee

Cardiff City boss Mick McCarthy sent Chris Hughton a heartfelt message in his post-match interview after defeating Nottingham Forest 2-1 at the City Ground.

Hughton 's job has come under mounting pressure following a disastrous start to the season which has seen the Reds lose five of their six Championship matches.

It means the Reds have endured their worst to a season in 108 years, sit rock bottom in the Championship and are four points adrift of safety.

Speaking to Sky Sports at full-time, McCarthy said: "Look, Chris would have loved to have slapped me today and he knows I want to beat him.

"But he's my mate and I want to see him in a job. He's done briliantly wherever he's been. I think they've had troubles with covid and signing players, so I hope so but that's not for me to decide."

Lewis Grabban gave Forest a first half lead, but two goals from teenager Rubin Colwill saw the away side return to South Wales with all three points.

Amid Hughton coming in for plenty of criticism, national reports have claimed Chris Wilder and John Terry would be interested in the job, should a change be made.

Discussing the speculation surrounding his future at Forest, Hughton told NottinghamshireLive: “First and foremost, anything you’re telling me is news to me.

“One, because the only thing I do is concentrate on the job.

“It’s been a very difficult summer. With the recruitment process we have… yes, thankfully, we brought in players and there has certainly been a change here.

“It’s been difficult not being able to work with some of those players earlier in the pre-season, but it’s been a very difficult window for most.

“I only think about the next game.

“It’s a hugely disappointing result. And one thing I can tell you is I’m as disappointed as anybody.

“This is the job I do. I’m only thinking about how we get a result on Wednesday night, because this club deserves it. The supporters deserve it.

“I’ve got a group of players here who desperately want to get a result as well, but we have to go out and prove it.”
