Cardiff City apply for £8million in EFL funding after missing out on Welsh Government grant as Vincent Tan injects more cash into club

Cardiff City have submitted an application to the English Football League for an £8million support package to help stabilise finances over the coming months as the coronavirus pandemic continues to take its toll.

The news comes in the wake of the Welsh Government announcing a £17.7m rescue package for spectator sports hit by Covid-19, with with Welsh rugby, horseracing and cricket being among the sports to benefit.

The Football Association of Wales have been allocated £1.5m to disseminate throughout the country as they choose, however professional teams in the English league system like Cardiff, Swansea City and Newport County will not benefit from the Welsh Government grant.

Cardiff, like all clubs up and down the country, are currently operating at a massive loss, burning an estimated £3m per month as the pandemic really takes grip.

It is only through their generous owner Vincent Tan that the Bluebirds continue to stay afloat, with it understood that the Malaysian businessman wired across another £3m just a few days ago, which serves to highlight further his commitment to the club even in these difficult times.

But Cardiff are hoping to benefit from the rescue package, which was agreed between the EFL and the Premier League back in December and is worth £250m, with the Bluebirds having applied for the funding last week.

Championship clubs are allowed to apply for a maximum of £8m, but the EFL will decide based on a number of factors just how much funding each club will get.

The club hope a decision on the amount of funding they will receive will be made in the coming days.

The EFL are looking to deposit the funds within the next month.
