Cardiff City announce Steve Morison as new boss and Mark Hudson named on coaching staff

Steve Morison will be the new Cardiff City manager on a permanent basis with former Bluebirds captain Mark Hudson taking up a role on the coaching staff, the club have announced.

Former Wales striker Morison was placed in charge of the club as caretaker manager following the departure of Mick McCarthy, being asked to oversee the first team for the three games leading up to the international break.

As Cardiff looked for and contacted potential suitors, though, Morison and his assistant Tom Ramasut quietly set about stamping their mark on the first team and the results garnered praise from the boardroom as well as the stands.

Morison and Ramasut oversaw a dramatic comeback up at Stoke City, which saw Cardiff produce a remarkable turnaround from 3-0 down to earn a 3-3 draw, a frustrating 1-0 defeat by QPR and a thrilling 2-1 win over Huddersfield to end a 10-game winless run.

As a result, Morison has been given the job until the end of the current season. Ramasut is also part of the first-team coaching setup.

It is understood that Morison himself requested that Hudson be brought in to bolster the coaching staff, given James Rowberry has recently left to take charge of Newport County.

Owner Vincent Tan and the board also agreed that recruiting Hudson was the right step forward for the club.

Speaking of the decision, Tan said: “I have been encouraged by the team’s improved performances over the past three games, with the adoption of a more attractive and progressive style of football.

“What’s more, I think that the excellent work done by Steve and Tom at U23 level this season puts them in the very best position to help develop a talented crop of young players emerging at senior level. I’m also very pleased that Mark is returning to the club as part of the coaching setup.

“A healthy finish in the Championship this season is, of course, of paramount importance. A review of the side’s progress will be undertaken at the end of the campaign.”

Morison's immediate target is for Cardiff to pick up from where they left off against the Terriers and get points in the bag.

Cardiff find themselves near the foot of the table and must build some momentum in the build-up to Christmas if they are to catapult themselves up the table and away from the drop zone.

Morison's first game as permanent manager of Cardiff City will be on November 20, when the Bluebirds travel to Deepdale to take on Preston.

The club will also now begin the recruitment process to fill the vacant under-23s manager position.
