Cardiff City announce Max Watters signing as Bluebirds steal him from under Swansea City's nose

Cardiff City have made their first signing of the January transfer window with the capture of striker Max Watters from Crawley Town.

South Wales rivals Swansea City had long held an interest in signing the 21-year-old, however it is understood they were unwilling to meet Crawley's asking price.

However, the Bluebirds have now swooped in a deal which could potentially be worth up to £1m if a succession of add-on clauses are fulfilled.

Neil Harris had been keen on adding a striker to the ranks in this window, with right back and centre back other areas in which he would like to bolster, and has succeeded with the addition of Watters.

"When I first found out about Cardiff's interest I was immediately attracted to it. Wales is a lovely place to live, so it came down to that really," he said.

"As a striker, you've got to score goals, and that's what I'm here to do.

"It's a big game at home against QPR in midweek. It's a shame that fans can't be here so I can play in front of them. Hopefully I'm involved and hopefully we can get the win."

The youngster is enjoying a breakthrough season this term, having scored an impressive 16 goals in 18 games in this campaign, prompting Crawley director Erdem Konyar to label him the "most valuable player in England" at the minute.

Watters' former manager at Crawley, John Yems, had likened the player to Arsenal great Ian Wright, which is praise indeed and means Cardiff fans can perhaps look forward to some pace and dynamism up top.

Watters himself has said he has looked to Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy for inspiration, having himself endured a journey through Non League before landing at League Two Crawley Town.

Watters counts Thurrock, Barking, Ashford United, Doncaster Rovers, Grantham Town, Gainsborough Trinity, Mickleover Sports and Maidstone United as his previous clubs before Crawley.
