Cardiff City announce first January transfer signing as former Liverpool defender joins on loan

Cardiff City have completed a loan move for Bournemouth left-back Brad Smith.

The 25-year old, City's first signing of the January window, will link up with Neil Harris and his squad for the remainder of the 2019/20 campaign.

An Australian international, Smith started his career as a teenager at Liverpool in 2013, making five first team appearances, the first of which came as a substitute against Chelsea.

A season-long loan spell at Swindon Town followed, only for the Reds to recall him following a contract dispute.

Smith later joined Bournemouth three years later, making his Premier League debut for the Cherries against Arsenal in November 2016, but struggled to establish himself amid staunch competition from Charlie Daniels.

With 22 international caps to his name, Smith spent last season on loan at MLS outfit Seattle Sounders, where he played 31 games, eventually becoming the first Australian to lift the MLS Cup Trophy.

He is now the first signing of the Neil Harris era at the Cardiff City Stadium.
