Cardiff City and Leeds United targeting Nottingham Forest fan favourite - reports

Cardiff City are reportedly interested in making a move for Nottingham Forest defender Yohan Benalouane, but could yet face competition from Leeds United.

The Tunisian, who was part of the Leicester City squad that claimed an unlikely Premier League title, only joined Nottingham Forest for an undisclosed fee in January, but is set to become a free agent in the summer.

According to The Guardian , both Cardiff and Leeds are keen on making a move for the 31-year old, who's become something of a cult hero during his short time at the City Ground.

Having previously plied his trade in Serie A and Ligue 1, he is well set up to bring experience to any back four, although Cardiff's chances of landing him could well hinge on preserving their Premier League status.

The Bluebirds are currently two points adrift of safety ahead of their clash with Chelsea on Sunday, while Leeds are still in the running for automatic promotion from the Championship.

Benalouane has kept three clean sheets in nine games for the Reds, but his disciplinary record could well prove a concern, with the centre-back picking up a card in nearly half of those games.

He was sent off during a 2-0 defeat to Birmingham City last month, before netting a dramatic winner in the East Midlands derby with Derby County - a performance that left his boss delighted.

Martin O'Neill said afterwards: “Yohan was immense. I thought he was absolutely fantastic. He was fantastic in almost everything he did.

“He was just terrific. I think that was his best performance and it came in a big derby game, in front of a full house.

"Against Derby, I would not say he obeyed absolutely everything on that front, but he was so much better, in terms of thinking about things.

"He was great.”
