Cardiff City and former Aston Villa star writes his name into football folklore with historic goal

Cardiff City's Leandro Bacuna made an unexpected moment of history by scoring the first finals goal for his country Curacao as they beat Honduras 1-0 in the CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The tournament, being staged in the United States, is the equivalent of the Euros for North, Central American and Caribbean sides, although Brazil have also previously competed.

And Bacuna turned the 2019 finals on their head with the moment that sealed Curacao's shock victory. They next meet Jamaica in a bid to make the knockout stages.

The Dutch Caribbean island is better known for its beaches and coral reefs than any football heritage.

But Bacuna ensured they grabbed headlines around the world with the 40th minute goal that stunned former World Cup finalists Honduras in Houston.

Curacao had only previously reached the Gold Cup once, losing their three group games in 2017 and not scoring.

Bacuna was signed by Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock in January and has yet to come close to netting a goal for Cardiff.  But he has a decent record of 10 goals in 22 international appearances for his country.

Prior to joining Cardiff, Bacuna played more than 100 games for Aston Villa over a four-year spell. He then joined Reading, before moving  to the Welsh capital in January.

He actually had a decent record in the Premier League, Cardiff winning five of the 11 games Bacuna featured in.

With Warnock having lost almost an entire midfield, Bacuna is likely to feature as a utility player in the coming 2019-20 Championship campaign by filling gaps in the centre.
