Cardiff Christmas Market closed as Wales goes into Level 4 lockdown

Cardiff Christmas Market has closed four days early this year after the Welsh Government brought forward Alert Level 4 restrictions for Wales.

The new lockdown means all non-essential shops, gyms and hospitality must close while stay-at-home restrictions have also come into effect.

The announcement saw many people head to the shops on Saturday night before the lockdown started at midnight. You can read more about this and the First Minister's response here.

Rules surrounding Christmas have also changed after a new strain of cornoavirus was identified, with only two households allowed to come together on Christmas Day. You can read more about the new Christmas coronavirus rules here.

Following the announcement, Cardiff Christmas Market confirmed they would be closing earlier than planned.

They told social media followers: "Due to the announcement tonight from the Welsh Government, we will sadly not be reopening.

"Thank you to everyone who supported our exhibitors this year and respected the rules for social distancing and masks. Let us hope next year will bring better tidings."

On Sunday workers were seen dismantling the Cardiff Christmas Market, which would have been open over the Christmas period.

The market, which is predominately home to Welsh handmade art and crafts and is located in Cardiff city centre, was due to stay open until December 23.

Earlier in December Christmas markets had been allowed to remain open while all other outdoor attractions held for entertainment reasons and "winter wonderland type events" were ordered to shut down.

However, under Alert Level 4 restrictions in Wales all "non-essential retail, close contact services, gyms and leisure centres and hospitality" must close.

Reacting to the news, one person wrote: "Great Christmas Market. Shame to be cut short but nice to see you all this year bringing some joy for no matter how short a period. Look forward to next year!"

While another added: "Really enjoyed the market this year and really well organised. So sorry for exhibitors having to cut their time short. Hope to see you all again next year."
