Cardiff café Garlands has closed suddenly after almost 40 years

A café that has traded in Cardiff's Duke Street Arcade for nearly 40 years has closed this week.

Garlands Coffee was set to celebrate its 40th year in 2020 and its loyal customers enjoyed Welsh-themed breakfasts, fluffy pancakes, homemade lunches and coffees in the cosy café, which closed its doors for the final time on Tuesday, February 4.

A message was posted on the café's Facebook page - but no reason was given for the closure.

It said: "We're really sorry to announce that we are closing our doors.

"A huge thank you to our staff for their hard work and of course a massive thank you to you, our loyal customers, thank you to every single one of you.

"It's been a pleasue(sic) to serve you. Over and out. Garlands, Cardiff."

The theatre-themed venue was painted by the stage painters from the New Theatre and pictures of Welsh acting and singing legends adorned the walls.

Manager Rhian Jenkins said: "It's got a lot of history behind it. It's an institution that's been here for so long. Thanks to everyone who has come in."

Some regulars have posted their good luck messages and disappointment on social media.

Joanne Lacy wrote:  "This is so sad, daughter and I have enjoyed your food when we visit Cardiff since she was tiny."

"Aw we’re truly gutted for you!" posted Liz Wilcox.  "We love garlands and always make a pit stop here when in town! Thanks for the best eggs royale around good luck for the future xxx."
