Cardiff Bus announces new reduced services because of coronavirus

Cardiff Bus will run reduced services throughout the week because of the coronavirus outbreak.

From Monday the company will run Saturday timetables across the majority of its services.

The changes have come into effect following the UK government’s latest advice on non-essential travel in an attempt to tackle the growing pandemic.

All services will follow the Saturday service timetables from Monday March 23 with the exception of the 12, 15, 64, 65, 65A, 98 and Cardiff MET M1, M2, M3, M4.

A shuttle bus will run between Wood Street and University Hospital of Wales to connect customers on service 95 with the hospital.

Operations and commercial director Gareth Stevens said: “This decision has not been taken lightly, but has been introduced following government travel recommendations and with the health and wellbeing of all our customers and staff in mind.

“We recognise that these changes could have a significant impact for our customers, and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused.

“However, we feel we have taken the necessary steps, in line with government guidance, to safeguard the health of our customers, staff, and the wider Cardiff community.”

Their fleet of buses will also undergo extra cleaning each day including “thorough” cleaning of hand rails, handles and any other areas customers might touch.

The changes come as Cardiff council announced widespread closures of facilities, tourist attractions and leisure centres as it responds to the coronavirus outbreak.

Bins collections for households are also changing and planned events like the RHS flower show are being scrapped.

Cardiff Market is among the venues shutting. It will be open on Thursday and Friday and closed from the weekend onwards.

Cardiff Bus’s customer service centre on Sloper Road will be closed to customers from Monday March 23, but the Travel Centre on Westgate Street will remain open.
