Cardiff Blues v Ospreys team news: George North and Alun Wyn Jones return for Ospreys as Gareth Anscombe starts for Blues

The Ospreys have received a huge boost as they welcome back Wales stars George North and Alun Wyn Jones for the pivotal Judgement Day derby against the Cardiff Blues.

North has been out of action since suffering a double fracture in his left hand during Wales' Grand Slam triumph over Ireland last month.

Talisman Jones has also been missing since that game after suffering knee ligament damage early on, despite playing the full 80 minutes.

For the Cardiff Blues, John Mulvihill has stayed true to his word as he selects Wales playmaker Gareth Anscombe at full-back, in spite of his impending move to the Ospreys.

The winner of this derby will go into a play-off and keep their hopes of playing Champions Cup rugby next season alive, the loser is resigned to the Challenge Cup next term.

That prompted some to call for Anscombe to be dropped amid fears over a conflict of interest - a claim Anscombe has strongly denied - but he'll start with Jarrod Evans taking the No.10 shirt.

The Ospreys have named a strong side for the game, with 12 Wales internationals in their starting XV.

Keelan Giles and Bradley Davies have made way for the British and Irish Lions duo of North and Jones to return.

Sam Davies is reinstated at fly-half and Tom Botha is back at tight-head in the only other changes to the team that thumped the Southern Kings a fortnight ago.

“Our goal for the season has been to achieve Champions Cup qualification, Saturday provides another opportunity to keep that goal alive," said Ospreys boss Allen Clarke.

Gareth Anscombe admits pivotal Ospreys derby will be 'awkward' as he addresses conflict of interest fears

“Over the last number of months we've approached it one game at a time aiming to improve on a daily basis and delivering on the pitch. There's a tremendous buzz in the camp coming off the back of three bonus point wins.

"Those performances have been forged on the back of a good balance between quality training and enjoyment."

As for the Blues, they make four personnel changes to the side that lost to Connacht as they welcome back juggernaut No.8 Nick Williams, who will captain the side, with Seb Davies returning to lock.

Speedster Aled Summerhill comes in for Jason Harries and the experienced Lloyd Williams starts at scrum-half ahead of Tomos Williams.

Anscombe's move to full-back makes way for Evans, with Matthew Morgan dropping out of the 23.

"It’s a winner-takes-all, so whoever wins this game will finish fourth in the pool and will probably be the best Welsh region across the calendar year," said Mulvihill.

"It’s a game of massive significance for us, after tasting Heineken Champions Cup rugby this year, and we want to go back and player there again next year.

France offer Shaun Edwards the contract Wales wouldn't as news expected imminently - reports

“It is great to have Nick back to lead the team on Saturday. He is such an important player to our group, who leads by example, galvanises the team and gets us over the gain-line.

“I have no doubts over Gareth’s commitment. He is the consummate professional and is hugely competitive. He has had a great season here at Cardiff Blues and will want to go out on a high."

James King becomes the sixth player to make 200 appearances for the Ospreys as Dillon Lewis makes his 50th appearance for the Blues.
