Cardiff Blues to do 'whatever we can' for devastated player after brother's sudden death on Christmas Eve

Cardiff Blues boss John Mulvihill has said the region will do whatever they can for winger Aled Summerhill, whose brother passed away on Christmas Eve.

Robert Huw Summerhill died suddenly two days before the Blues' game against the Dragons at the Arms Park. An impeccable minute's silence was held before kick off in tribute to him.

Mulvihill revealed he spoke to the winger on Christmas Day before the region beat their rivals 16-12 on Boxing Day.

"It's not very nice when you have to ring someone on Christmas Day and talk through that," said the Blues boss.

"Obviously he's devastated and so is his family but we'll continue to support him.

"They sat at home as a family today and watched the game. I'm sure we gave them a little bit of joy but he'll go through his grieving process.

"The boys are strong for him and whatever we can do to help, we will."

A statement from Cardiff Blues said: "Ahead of kick-off, we paid tribute to Robert Huw Summerhill, brother of Cardiff Blues' Aled Summerhill, who passed away on Christmas Eve. All of our thoughts are with Aled and all of Robert's family and friends during this difficult time."

Summerhill wasn't due to feature in the match prior to the tragedy but has been a key member of the Blues team in recent seasons, playing nine times this campaign.
