Cardiff Blues make emergency signing amid injury crisis and recruit talented Welsh youngster from England

Cardiff Blues are bringing in two more Welsh players from England.

Winger Ryan Edwards is joining from Bristol on loan with immediate effect in response to a back three injury crisis.

And Wales U20s fly-half Luke Scully is set to come on board permanently, potentially as early as next month.

They follow Cardiff-born No 8 Sam Moore, who has arrived from Sale.

It will be Edwards’ second spell on loan with the Arms Park outfit. He was with them for a couple of months in early 2018, making one appearance.

This time he has been drafted in due to a lengthy casualty list in the back three.

Owen Lane, Matthew Morgan and Harri Millard are all out for the season and Josh Adams will be away with Wales until late March, while Hallam Amos, Aled Summerhill, Ioan Davies and long-term absentee Rhun Williams are all sidelined at present.

So in comes the 29-year-old Edwards on loan until the end of the season.

The Newport-born wing, who had one game for the Dragons as a youngster, has been with Bristol since 2012, making 82 appearances and scoring 25 tries.

He will be bring experience and a wiry, predatory presence, with his former team-mate Ryan Bevington having likened him to Liam Williams.

Wales prop Bevington, who played with Edwards at Bristol, said: “He is an electric attacker who is deceptively strong and has a great set of wheels.”

As for Scully, who will be 20 later this month, he is a controlling outside-half in the mould of Dan Biggar and Owen Farrell, who also has the ability to play at 12.

Born in Neath, he began his rugby with Banwen RFC and Neath Athletic. He then progressed through the Ospreys age grade system, playing for their U16s and U18s.

But after attracting interest from a couple of English clubs, he joined the Worcester Senior Academy in 2018.

He has represented Wales U18s and came off the bench for his U20s debut in the closing stages of Friday’s defeat to Italy in Colwyn Bay.

A good kicker who enjoys the physical side of the game, he will provide the Blues with another option at fly-half, alongside Jarrod Evans and Jason Tovey.

He’s set to join on a permanent deal and could link up with them as early as after the Six Nations.
