Cardiff Bay boardwalk stripped bare as essential repair work gets underway

The Cardiff Bay River Walk has been stripped bare after work to repair it got underway.

Works to replace decking boards on the lower boardwalk in front of the Senedd began on February 8, with the area set to be closed off until the end of March.

New pictures of the popular walking spot in Mermaid Quay show workmen at the site, with all of the decking removed and the water visible through the remaining slats.

While an exact end date for the repair work is not yet known, Cardiff council gave a provisional date of March 31 when the closure was first announced at the start of February.

A council spokesperson also confirmed at the time that 10% of the pontoons directly opposite the boardwalk would be closed as a result of the work, but there would not be any impact on the commercial boat operations.

The continued closure will affect next month's Cardiff Half Marathon, which traditionally passes over the boardwalk, with organisers confirming that a "slight deviation" to the route will be needed as a result.

A representative from organisers Run 4 Wales said: "We are aware of the maintenance work being carried out to the boardwalk in Cardiff Bay.

"A slight deviation to the Cardiff Half route will be required but this will not have any major impact on the event. Agreed changes will be minimal and will be communicated to any impacted residents and businesses as soon as possible."
