Cardiff bar customers dispersed by police after congregating outside and ignoring social distancing

Police were called to disperse a group of patrons who congregated outside a pub in Cardiff after buying takeaway beer and food while ignoring social distancing.

Jack Russell's Irish Bar, in Merthyr Road, Whitchurch, reopened on the weekend following coronavirus lockdown closures and legally operated a takeaway service.

But it has been claimed that people who had bought alcohol and food from the pub remained in the street and began using the beer gardens of shut pubs on Sunday.

A statement was posted on the Earl Haig Memorial Club's Facebook page, complaining about the behaviour of people who had bought food or drink from Jack Russell's.

It said: "All areas of our premises are closed to public including our beer garden. (On Sunday) Jack Russell's were serving take away pints. Whilst we respect their right to trade we don't agree with how things took place.

"We had to remove public from our private beer gardens and I know other shut premises have had issues. Social restrictions and guidelines were not adhered. We had nothing to do with these matters (on Sunday)."

A spokeswoman from South Wales Police confirmed they attended Merthyr Road on Sunday.

She said: "Those involved, including the licence holder, were given suitable advice and moved on. The premises closed and the matter has now been referred to licensing officers."

A spokesman from Jack Russell's Irish Bar said: "We are currently working and liaising with both South Wales Police and indeed the licensing authority,

"As we are still currently in discussions with both, I feel it would be unfair for us to comment any further at this time."
