Cardiff and Swansea are 'two of the cheapest places in Britain for nights out'

Cardiff and Swansea have been revealed as two of the cheapest cities in the UK for a night out.

New research has found that Wales’ two biggest cities are among the best options for those looking for a night on the town, taking into account the average price of drinks, food and even taxis home.

The data has been compiled by currency transfer site Xendpay, which analysed cities in the UK which are home to the top 40 universities, according to the Complete University Guide.

The study revealed that Dundee in Scotland was actually the most affordable city, with the average cost of a night out being £25.35, based on the cost of a pint of beer, a cocktail and a five-mile taxi ride.

Cardiff came out as the second most affordable city for a night out with the following average prices:

Pint - £3.43

Cocktail - £7

Fast-food combo meal - £5.90

Five-mile taxi fare - £11

Total cost - £27.33

Swansea was the second most affordable place in Wales and the third most affordable in the UK.

Here are Swansea's figures:

Pint - £3.21

Cocktail - £5.66

Fast-food meal - £5.48

Five-mile taxi fare - £13

Total cost - £27.35

Perhaps unsurprisingly, a night out in London is almost twice as expensive as what one would expect in any Welsh city.

These are the average prices there.

Pint - £5.72

Cocktail - £12

Fast-food meal - under £6

Five-mile taxi fare - £26 -

The taxi cost is almost as much as the combined cost of drinks, food and a taxi fare in both Cardiff and Swansea.

Other expensive cities were revealed to be Oxford and Brighton, coming out second and third on the least affordable list.

Keep up to date with what's on where you live

The affordability of a night out in Cardiff or Swansea will obviously be a welcome boost for students returning to both cities in the coming weeks, with many set to be able to enjoy unrestricted access to pubs, clubs and restaurants, possibly for their first time since the outbreak of coronavirus in March, 2020.

Commenting on the study, a spokesperson from Xendpay said: “Freshers is right around the corner for new and returning university students.

"With the cost of a night out in London being almost double that of a night out in Cardiff and Swansea, students in the capital will need plenty of money-saving savvy to have a good night which doesn’t drain their bank account.”
