Cardiff air space is unlikely to open again today airport officials have said.
Despite flights bans in Scotland being lifted this morning, reports from the National Air Traffic Service have said new eruptions from Iceland have signalled another ash cloud is heading towards the UK, which will prevent air space being opened further south.
A statement released at 9am said:
"Part of Scottish airspace including Aberdeen, Inverness and Edinburgh airports will continue to be available from 1300-1900 today, and also south to Newcastle Airport. Restrictions will remain in place over the rest of UK airspace below 20,000ft."
This restriction will allow some flight routes in Scotland to take place, but means flights in and out of Cardiff are still unable to go ahead.
Spokesperson for Cardiff Airport Cassie Houghton said this is having a dramatic affect on the airport - with skeleton staff in place and other workers in standby waiting for the all clear.
"Obviously there will be an impact [financially], but safety really does have to come first."There won't be any flights in and out of Cardiff and we are waiting for updates from NATS. But the eruption has actually worsened so it is unlikely the air space will open soon."
