Cardiff A&E doctor who worked until breaking point during pandemic told his British citizenship faces being revoked

A Cardiff doctor has gone viral on social media after critising the UK Government's proposed Nationality and Borders Bill.

Dr Farbod Babolhavaeji, a consultant in emergency medicine at the University Hospital of Wales (UHW) in Cardiff, posted on Twitter a picture of himself wearing a mask in the hospital.

He said: "Here I am working in the NHS. I came to this country as a child refugee. I have only ever had a British passport & only ever considered myself a British citizen. The Nationality and Borders Bill means that my citizenship could be revoked without right of appeal. Thanks for that."

Clause nine of Home Secretary Priti Patel's proposed legislation would give the government the right to deprive British people of their citizenship without informing them first:

On November 2 the New Statesman reported that nearly six million people in England and Wales could be affected, including two in every five people from a non-white ethnic minority background.

Hollywood actor Hugh Grant retweeted Dr Babolhavaeji saying: "Compare and contrast this man’s contribution to the UK vs Priti Patel’s."

Dr Babolhavaeji called on people to sign a petition to remove clause nine from the bill. The petition has now received over 178,000 signatures.

This is not the first time Farbod, who contracted Covid himself last year, has gone viral. In August he tweeted a warning about the how the NHS was becoming overwhelmed with pressure from both Covid and back dated elective procedures.

He said: "I just got home from my evening shift in the Emergency Department. Every thing is at its limit. Every one is working flat out. Every area is full to bursting. Every day a little more is needed. It cannot go on like this. I cannot go on like this."
