The Tokyo Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games announced on Thursday that the Olympic Village in the Harumi area, Chuo Ward, Tokyo, will open on July 14 and feature furniture such as cardboard beds.
Eighteen thousand beds will be used during the Olympics and 8,000 beds for the Paralympics -- with the bed frames being made from light cardboard that can be recycled. Additionally, the athletes will be able to change the layout of their room if they so desire.
The residential area will have wide aisles to enable those who are physically impaired to easily navigate the passages and have ease of access from floor to floor.
The 44-hectare village, which has three sides that offer scenic views of the sea, has 3,850 units at 21 accommodation buildings with 14 to 18 stories and boasts facilities such as a dining hall, gym and clinic. Athletes will stay at the village from July 14 to Aug. 12 during the Olympic Games and from Aug. 18 to Sep. 9 during the Paralympics.
After the games, the accommodation buildings will be renovated into apartments for rent or sale. And the site of village will be converted into a new town where about 12,000 people can live with an elementary school and junior high school.
