AHMEDABAD: An unidentified man cheated one Manilal Kalma, a resident of Hathijan, by swapping his debit card at an ATM kiosk of a nationalized bank. Karanj police on Monday registered a case and began an investigation.
Kalma, in his complaint of cheating and breach of trust, stated that on Saturday he had gone to withdraw money from an ATM near the AMC office in Danapith. He said that while trying to withdraw cash, the transaction did not go forward and an error was displayed.
He decided to insert the card in a second machine and when was doing so, the person standing behind him offered to help. The person inserted his card and told him to enter his PIN. Again, due to an error, he could not withdraw cash. He later decided to make a withdrawal using a cheque
The complainant stated that when he presented a cheque at the bank, he was told that there was just Rs 985 in his account. He was informed of transactions at an ATM. Kalma stated that when he checked his ATM card, he realised the card had been exchanged by the unidentified man who had offered to help him.
He said that the man had later withdrawn Rs 23,000 from his ATM using his PIN.
