Card skimming device found in NI Tesco Pay at Pump machine

A card skimming device has been discovered at a Tesco 'Pay at Pump' petrol station in Northern Ireland.

Police say the device was fitted to the card slot on one of the pumps at Tesco filling station in Co Tyrone.

A PSNI Cookstown spokesperson posted on Facebook: "A skimmer was discovered this evening fitted to the card slot on one of the pumps at Tesco filling station on Orritor Road.

"This was a very well disguised device and full credit goes to the alert individual who spotted it.

"Enquires are continuing as to its origins and when it was put there."

Urging people to check closely when using self-service card machines and ATMs, police added: "Advice as always its to thoroughly check any card slot whether its an ATM or a self service petrol pump."

"Look closely and check for any additional surround on the slot. In this case only a very small metal strip about 20mm x 2mm was visible.

"Spread the word and warn others. If you see any suspicious activity at ATMs or pumps never hesitate to call us."

Police advise customers to follow the advice below to ensure safe transactions;

• Make sure you hide your pin number while at an ATM as criminals may be watching;
• Be aware of your surroundings. If you are talking on a phone or wearing headphones you can't take in what is going on around you;
• Cardholders should also guard their personal identification number (PIN) more carefully and be aware that any form of distraction or assistance while they are using an ATM could mean someone is trying to steal their dispensed money or their card.
• If someone tries to distract you and you feel unsure - cancel the ATM transaction.
• Do not be complacent - a robbery can occur in crowded environments, not just deserted streets.
